The Wikimedia Foundation is negotiating licensing deals with tech giants to offset rising infrastructure costs caused by AI companies scraping Wikipedia's open content. Automated bot traffic from AI model training has strained server capacity, creating financial pressure on the donation-funded platform.

Co-founder Jimmy Wales confirmed talks with multiple firms, including Google, which secured the first commercial licensing agreement in 2022. The nonprofit aims to keep Wikipedia free for public access while making AI developers pay for heavy commercial usage.

Creative Commons licensing complexities add another LAYER to these negotiations. As AI firms increasingly rely on Wikipedia's vast knowledge base, the Foundation seeks sustainable solutions that balance open access with operational realities.
